News:- We are pleased to announce the completion of a new urban square within the heart of Leicester University campus
BCA were appointed as lead designers for the re-development of an existing car park situated within the heart of the camps. The brief was to create ‘a high quality multi use events space’.
The paving layout has been designed to create a clutter free space with clear un-obstructed access routes connecting to the surrounding campus buildings. A palette of carefully selected hard landscape materials has been chosen to complement the architectural styling of the buildings utilising both natural stone and concrete aggregate paving. A warmer Sand stone has been selected to wrap around the Fielding Johnson Building forming a plinth around its base whilst the clean lines of granite have been used to continue the strong axis leading towards the library building. A combination of contemporary silver grey concrete aggregate paving has been selected for the main central square with dashes of more natural tones included to add warmth and depth whilst feature contrasting bands dissect the space.
A planting palette has been selected to provide spatial definition and attractive seasonal interest using a combination of ornamental and herbaceous species. Tree species have been chosen to best meet the needs of the site with formal upright species (Liriodendron tulipifera fastigiata) selected along the central pedestrian access leading to the library, whilst larger stature trees (Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’) with incredible leaf shape and dazzling autumn colour (deep claret) have been used to frame the central square

It’s been all cakes, balloons and fun at the Barry Chinn Associates offices this week as we celebrated the 20 year anniversary of the company.
The team surprised Barry with an office party to celebrate 20 years of business; we decorated the office with banners, balloons and bunting; Dorian baked and skilfully decorated a fabulous garden cake for the occasion and we sat back waiting for Barry to arrive. Once the surprise was over and the presents were opened, we all tucked into the buffet and talked of where we all were back in 1993.
Barry reflected on how he never envisaged the company would have done as well as it had; his original business plan was for up to 5 members of staff! He spoke of how fortunate Barry Chinn Associates has been to have such loyal clients, dedicated members of staff and strong relationships with a wide network of developers, consultants and contractors.
As a combined anniversary-Christmas celebration Barry treated the team to a festive trip to London where we enjoyed walking around the new landscape scheme Leicester Square, watching street performers at Covent Garden, a visit to the Cambridge theatre to see watching Matilda the musical and a delicious Christmas dinner at Sophie’s Steakhouse and bar.
Here’s to the next 20 years!
The play area was completed in September and adopted by Harborough District Council under a S106 in early October. The event was attended by members of the local council, the client CJC Development and a group of local school children.
At the beginning of May BCA successfully passed a combined ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 external surveillance audit.
Well done to the BCA team for ensuring that our quality and environmental management remain at the highest level.
