Worcester County Cricket Ground
BCA were appointed in July 2011 to prepare the design for a public realm space situated adjacent to the River Seven, within close proximity to Worcester County Cricket Ground and Worcester Cathedral.
The vision for the space was to transform a left over parcel of land and create a coherent, high quality external environment forming a gateway to the western side of the River Seven whilst drawing on the historic value of the built environment around the Cathedral and of Worcester Cricket Ground.
The space has been dividing into three distinct areas. A predominantly hard surfaced amenity space, incorporating seating, quality granite based paving, an arc of large stature semi mature street trees and feature wall with integrated signage. A new pedestrian route ‘Worcester Way’ was created to link the eastern bank of the city to the cricket ground. This includes a cricket themed time line set into the paving, inscribed timber bollards and contemporary lighting columns incorporating banners. An oval lawn radiates out from the entrance to a new hotel situated towards the south-west of the space set into the north stand of the cricket ground. The oval form is continued throughout the amenity space through bands of radiating, contrasting paving.
